Trio for Oboe, Clarinet, and Cello - Lin, Love, Webster
00:00 / 00:00

The Trio for Oboe, Clarinet, and Piano was completed in September of 1998.  The work is cast in one movement with four smaller sub-movements contained within the whole.  The primary motivic material is all derived from a simple four note set of two half steps and a major third outlining a tritone and the secondary motive is a grace note figure consisting of a ascending minor third.  This motive is first heard in the oboe as the very first sound of the piece while the primary motive is first heard in stretto between the oboe and cello.  The first sub-movement is a simple binary form which incorporates dance-like rhythms and shifting asymmetric meters.  The second movement of the work is a slower rhapsodic section built as an arch form.  The arch that supports the movement is a long melody which appears in the cello and spans a five octave range.  This arch is briefly interrupted by a thematic statement in the oboe.  The third section of the work is a playful improvisatory discussion between the three instruments.  The form of this sub-movement is an elongated three part form with each section being a development of a simple thematic idea.  The forth and final sub-movement of the work is a return back to the opening ideas, this time seen from a different perspective and more developed.  Overall the piece is centric with the opening tonality in “A” with large scale modulations to “D” and “G” and returning to “A” for the finish.
