Sideways (2018)

for flute and Guitar

Originally I sat down to compose a suite of modal dance pieces for flute and guitar.  During the writing process the entire project went sideways on me and honestly, I couldn’t be happier.  However, some vestige of my original concept still inhabit the work.

Upside is a relaxed dance piece with a triumphant finale.  Of all three moments this one contains the most reflections of my initial modal intent.

Inside, the Mind, a Rumination.  The second movement encapsulates the feeling of a rumination inside a restless mind.  Deeply introspective yet troubled. A journey from tranquility to agitation and dread despite the best efforts of the host. Metrically the piece should be though of in 13/4.  Usually notated two bars of four and one of five.  Metric accents should be avoided save the first bar of four in the pattern.

Flipside is a frolicking flight of fancy.
